Favourite Things

Whilst researching upcoming blog posts, I’ve been collecting a few of my favourite products along the way. Just like shopping, I always find something lovely when I don’t necessarily need it right at that time, so I’ve been saving them in the hope I can use them later. No time like the present! Here are a few of my favourite, random things that I love…

1. British Birds and Little Birds Tea Towels from Cath Kinston  2. Pure Copper Kettle from Amazon  3. & 4. Edible Lace and Rose Petal Lollipops from The Little Lollipop Shop  5. Set of 3 Vintage Apple Cake Tins from Dotcomgiftshop.com  6. How to Find Old LA Map from Herb Lester  7. Bronze Glass Tealight Holder from H&M  8. Glass Tealight Holder from H&M  9. Pineapple Throw Cushion from Sibling & Co.  10. Wander Throw Pillow from Sylvia Cook Photography  11. Vintage Floral Butterfly from Bombus

Flower Photography Trend

Posted On: Monday, July 27, 2015

For a while now there has been a new trend emerging in photography, particularly flower photography. The trend I’m talking about is the flat image, where there’s little tone and shadow within the photo and it appears to have a subtle white film over it, creating a delicate vintage feel to the overall image.

Flower-inspiration

I guess you could say this trend has been prominent in photography for quite a while now and this is down to the rise in photography apps. Some say this is a cheats way to create this effect, and I tend to agree, but it lets the novice photographer create an image they might not necessarily be able to do otherwise. Controversial I know! When I take my photos, as long as the image is right in my camera first, then the app just enhances the overall look instantly. Here’s a few photos I’ve been experimenting with, I’m getting there!

It’s not just photography that features this flat photo trend, more and more products on the high street and online are applying this design and the results are wonderful and elegant…

1. Wondland Floral Face Watch from Olivia Burton  2. Peonies Hand Stitched Journal from Paperchase  3. Like Yesterday Pillow from Sylvia Cook Photography  4. Technicolour Xhatch iPhone Case from Ted Baker

So next time you photograph your favourite flower, food or building why not apply this flat style, it will enhance your photos more than you think.

Seeing Spots and Dots

Spots Montage

In May I shared a post about my love for stripes, and fellow blogger Dorkfeatures suggested recreating the post but with spots. So that’s just what I did! As with stripes I love black and white spots and the dazzling effect they create. Regimented, random, small or big, my love of spots is growing everyday and I don’t have enough spotty products in my life. I think I need to go shopping to add to my collection…

Spotty Products

1. Tea Towel from H&M  2. Hello Beautiful Polka Dots Cushion from Allyson Johnson  3. A6 Chunky Notebook from Nest  4. Large Spot Tray from John Lewis  5. Spots Art Print from Katherine Dewick

Making the Most of Your Home

Making the most of our home is something we all strive to do, especially as it takes time to completely redecorate. The lovely folks at AgeUK have asked me to put together a few tips for making the most out of my home and what I would do to create a relaxing environment.

For me homeware is very important. We spend a lot of time at home and sometimes by adding a new, fresh touch here and there, can create a big difference. Two of my favourite things to buy and update are cushions and throws, they instantly add a pop of colour to a room with little expense. Throws and blankets are great for keeping warm on a late summer’s evening or wrapping up nice and toasty on a cold winter’s night. Cushions not only keep your bum comfy, they are great for nestling into with a good book.

Keeping-Warm

I’m a sucker for home decor too, whether it’s a quirky photo frame or a trinket that I just have too have! Accessorising your home can be as inexpensive as you like, which is perfect if you like to update your decor regularly – candle holders and small accessories are great for this! By simply adding new prints, photo’s and frames into a room, immediately brightens it up with a fresh look. If you’re like me, I mix and match frames, mirrors and prints so if I want to switch them around I can, without having to worry about co-ordinating them.

Decor

There are necessities we need for our home as well, and two which I always buy last minute or push down the shopping list are storage and lighting, especially lighting! My excuse is that I’m looking for that perfect lamp or light and I just haven’t found it yet, but the two lights I’ve selected below may have just gone onto the list… These two decorative elements make a house a home, they are not only practical but are a great way of updating your home without breaking the bank. Oh and they can add that splash of colour into a room without going all out colour crazy!

Light-&-Storage

Making the most out of your home doesn’t mean you have to completely re design, its about adding those little extra touches that bring it to life again.

5. Bullfinch Screenprint from Coo & Co  6. Deco Candlestick Holders from Victoria & Abigail  7. Rocking Birds from West Elm  8. Metal Photo Frame from H&M  9. Pink Anemone Photo from Danni Saw This

10. Soho Retro Tripod Metal Floor Lamp from Homebase  11. Metal Basket from H&M  12. Bobby Desk Lamp from Habitat  13. Mint Cork Lidded Box from John Lewis

I’m a girl that loves stripes, black and white stripes in particular, I love them so much I’m even wearing my favourite stripy jumper whilst writing this post. I like to call it a healthy obsession and I’m here to share it proudly with you all! I can’t even remember where this stripy love began, I think it’s gradually grown over the years and now it’s here to stay. When I’m out shopping I’m always drawn to black and white striped products, whether it’s homeware, clothes or shoes and here’s a few I need to add to my collection…

1. 1959 Art Print from Francesca Iannaccone  2. Isola Strip Round Frame from Paperchase  3. Cotton Cushion Cover from H&M  4. Stripes Graffiti Spray Wallpaper from Paperboy Wallpaper  5. This Easter there’s a new egg in town. Not satisfied with just a simple chocolate egg, chocolatiers are now creating something a little different, a luxury egg with an impressive eggsterior (sorry!) These creations would have made Willy Wonka proud, and it’s no longer the surprise inside that we crave anymore, it’s all about who can design the most decadent and luxurious Easter egg.

1. Egg in an Egg from The Chocolate Society  2. Speckled Mint White Chocolate Egg from James Chocolate  3. Milk Chocolate Robot Egg from Chococo  4. The Supermilk Facet Egg from Hotel Chocolat  5. Ombre Pink Blonde Chocolate Egg from The Chocolate Society  6. Hundreds and Thousands Chocolate Egg from Fortnum & Mason  7. Rainbow Egg from Artisan du Chocolate  8. Eton Mess Easter Egg from Thorntons

Creative Space Wish List

Since I started blogging 18 months ago I’ve always wanted a creative space to work in, somehow being sat at my kitchen table just doesn’t cut it. (Sorry to spoil the illusion!) My ideal space would be a large, white painted room inside a beautiful old mill, where I could sit and blog, design and photograph away to my hearts content…. but for the moment a little corner in my house will be perfect, decorated with a few of these lovely things to keep me inspired.

1. Copperfield Desk Lamp from Homebase  2. Retro Barber Board from Rose and Grey  3. Newbury Chair from Next  4. Black & White Flat Iron Print from Danni Saw This  5. Kisa Pyropet Candles from Pyropet Candles  6. A5 Notebook from Paperchase  7. Classic Black Kit-Cat Clock from Kit-Cat  8. Copper and Glass Box from H&M
